Themes as Dramatic Sketches

Themes for me are abstract dramatic sketches that serve as intellectual seeds for plays. Themes form the element of  dianoia: Gk thought. Dianoia is the action of reasoning, or lack of it, that characters reveal in their speech and action of their various ethos, which explains the mythos (plot) background and characters as it recreates themes via the interaction of plot and characters.

The practice of writing themes also builds my basic writing skills for other applications, like expose, technical writing, debate, and issue analysis. Themes are the framework for larger works and as exercises for critical and creative thinking.

I thank the numerous authors of the CBEST practice test books for offering the topics of my themes.

"Like Aristotle, I stand in awe of theater, writing for and about theater arts, like play writing, like dramaturgy and other critical analysis. I love the acting art, dance, teaching theater working in it, and watching it."—David Faubion, BA Theater Arts
